Oral photoprotection

Sun Exposure and Skin Damage

Sun exposure is a constant in our lives, with negative impacts on our skin. Even with the use of topical sunscreens, solar radiation can induce oxidative stress mediated by free radicals, triggering inflammatory processes with skin damage.

The immediate effects are redness, burning and edema, and later the destruction of collagen and elastin fibers, accelerating the appearance of wrinkles and sagging. The production of melanin is also activated, and hyperpigmentation may occur with the appearance of spots. Damage to cellular DNA can also result in skin cancer.

Oral photoprotection

As the application of topical sunscreen may not be applied in sufficient quantity, as early and frequently as necessary and on all exposed areas (even if this were the case, the effectiveness of protection would not be total), oral photoprotection, that is, supplements with antioxidant actives, help to minimize damage caused by solar radiation, proving useful because they enhance the effectiveness of sunscreens, being a powerful ally.

It should be noted that oral photoprotection does not replace the application of sunscreen, which should continue to be applied 30 minutes before sun exposure, even on cloudy days and reapplied frequently, especially after sweating or bathing.

They can be used with advantage by almost everyone, unless medically indicated otherwise (pathology or taking other incompatible supplements or medications), pregnant women and children. They are especially recommended for intense sun exposure, such as in the tropics, for the prevention and treatment of blemishes and skin diseases that worsen with sun exposure. It must be taken before sun exposure.

Among the active antioxidants that can be used orally is Polypodium Leucotomus extract, obtained from a fetus, with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immunity-stimulating action. It has a high content of phenolic compounds, such as caffeic acid and ferulic acid. It is the active ingredient that has the most scientific evidence of its effectiveness through studies on humans, being the most studied and referenced in scientific literature. It works by inactivating free radicals produced in the skin by the action of UV rays, reducing erythema, oxidative stress, DNA damage, inflammatory parameters, induced immunosuppression and tumor formation.

Fernblock is an extract of Polypodium Leucotomus with patented hydrolipid extraction technology from plant leaves and is used by CantabriaLabs laboratories in their Heliocare capsule supplements and in their topical sunscreens, as it has demonstrated effectiveness in both forms of use.

In addition to this, there are other substances with antioxidant properties such as Lycopene , Vitamin D , Vitamin E , Nicotinamide (Vitamin B3) . Probiotics such as Lactobacillus johnson , they may also present some modulation of inflammatory parameters and reduction of immunosuppression.

There is no capsule that replaces the use of topical sunscreen, the use of oral antioxidants is a complement that increases their effectiveness, being particularly useful for preventing wrinkles, blemishes and sun allergies.

As photoprotection can be defined as the set of measures that aim to minimize the harmful effects of sun exposure, it includes, in addition to face and body sunscreens, clothing (t-shirt, cap, hat) and oral photoprotection.

Oral sunscreen can be used by everyone, but it is especially recommended for those with blemishes, melasma, photodermatoses and a predisposition to skin cancer. It also prevents burns and slows down skin aging.
