Everything You Need to Know About Oral Hygiene

Maintaining good oral hygiene goes far beyond a beautiful smile ; it is essential for your overall health. Taking good care of your teeth and gums helps prevent cavities, gingivitis, bad breath and even more serious problems such as infections or periodontal disease.

When to Brush Your Teeth?

Ideally, you should brush your teeth at least twice a day: in the morning after breakfast and at night before going to bed. If possible, brush your teeth after your main meals.

How to Brush Properly?

Brush for at least two minutes, making sure to reach all surfaces of your teeth. Use gentle, circular motions; brushing too hard can damage your enamel and gums.

If you have consumed acidic foods or drinks (such as soft drinks, coffee, citrus juices or wine), wait 30 minutes before brushing your teeth to avoid wearing away the enamel.

Should You Rinse After Brushing?

No! After brushing, spit out any excess toothpaste, but do not rinse with water. This way, the fluoride stays on your teeth longer and continues to protect them.

If you wish, you can use a mouthwash with fluoride and without alcohol.

Dental Floss: Before or After Brushing?

Floss before brushing your teeth at least once a day, preferably at night. It removes debris from between your teeth, prevents tartar build-up and helps the fluoride in the toothpaste reach all areas.

Tongue Scraper: Yes or No?

The tongue scraper removes bacteria and accumulated residue, preventing bad breath. It should be used daily, ideally in the morning, before breakfast. After using, rinse your mouth with water.

Electric or Manual Toothbrush?

Electric toothbrushes tend to be more effective at removing plaque, thanks to their automatic and vibrating movements.

They are ideal for:

  • People with motor difficulties (such as the elderly)
  • Children in the learning phase
  • Those looking for greater comfort and efficiency
  • Manual brushes are also effective, but require more technique.

When to Change the Toothbrush?

Every 3 months or sooner if the bristles are worn and after illnesses such as colds, flu or mouth infections to avoid reinfection.

Hard or Soft Brush?

  • Soft bristles: Recommended for most people, especially those with sensitive gums or who brush hard.
  • Medium bristles: Only for those with healthy gums and good technique.
  • Hard bristles: Not recommended for daily use as they can cause wear and gum recession.

How Much Toothpaste Should I Use?

  • Up to 2 years: Toothpaste without fluoride or with low fluoride and a quantity equivalent to a grain of rice
  • 2 to 6 years: Toothpaste with 1000-1350 ppm of fluoride and an amount equivalent to a pea
  • From 6 years and adults: Toothpaste with 1350-1500 ppm of fluoride and a thin layer along the bristles

Good oral hygiene depends on simple but consistent habits! Regular visits to the dentist are also very important and should be done at least twice a year! Prevention and early diagnosis are essential to maintaining oral health throughout life.
