What is a cosmetic?

What is a cosmetic product:

Did you know that when you use toothpaste you are using a cosmetic product ?

Well, according to Infarmed and Regulation (EC) 1223/2009, a cosmetic product “is any substance or mixture intended to be placed in contact with the external parts of the human body (epidermis, hair and capillary systems, nails, lips and external genital organs) or with the teeth and oral mucous membranes, with the aim, exclusively or mainly, of cleaning them, perfuming them, changing their appearance, protecting them, keeping them in good condition or correcting body odors .” Products intended to be ingested, inhaled, injected or implanted in the human body are not considered cosmetic products.

There are several categories of cosmetic products, including skin care , such as moisturizing creams, body lotions, sunscreens and anti-aging products. Hair care products like shampoos, conditioners, hair masks and styling products (yes, even lice products are considered cosmetics). Makeup products , such as foundations, lipsticks, shadows and blushes, which are normally used to enhance natural beauty. And finally, hygiene products such as oral and oral hygiene, intimate hygiene and general hygiene.

According to current legislation, the cosmetic product must include in its labeling:

  • Commercial name and brand, namely the address of the brand’s headquarters;
  • Product type and function in Portuguese;
  • Packaging, referring to weight or volume;
  • Precautions for use and special warnings;
  • List of ingredients according to the international INCI nomenclature, International Nomenclature Cosmetic Ingredient;
  • Minimum durability date, if less than 30 months with the expression “To be used preferably before…” or the opened jar symbol and if greater than 30 months, with the period after opening;
  • Manufacturing batch number or reference that allows identification of the manufacture;

The list of ingredients is one of the most important factors in cosmetic labeling. An ingredient is understood to be any substance or mixture intended for the manufacture of a cosmetic product, excluding impurities or intermediates inherent to the process, which are absent from the final product. An ingredient, whether of natural, biotechnological origin or obtained by synthesis. They are divided into 3 categories:

Active ingredient , it presents a relevant action according to the different categories of cosmetic products.
Technological or primary ingredient , contributes to the physical form of the cosmetic product, also known as excipients.
Specific or secondary ingredient , which serves as an adjuvant in the formulation, contributing to the stability of the product like preservatives or to its organoleptic properties.

Cosmetic products are developed to meet individual needs and preferences . These can be targeted at specific skin types, such as dry, oily, sensitive or acne-prone skin. Additionally, they can be designed to address specific concerns, such as wrinkles, dark spots, acne, or dandruff. With a wide range of options available, consumers have the freedom to choose products that suit their personal needs and desires.
